DOH483 Dental Clinical Practice 5 (48)

Students participate in a clinical placement program in the provision of clinical care in varied settings in regional NSW. Each clinical site will have students providing dental care under supervision. Clinical learning is reinforced by means of case analyses, case reviews and clinical session reviews by clinical staff.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to identify and discuss the scope of oral/dental health needs of different societal and cultural groups within rural and regional communities
  • be able to demonstrate competent comprehensive treatment planning
  • be able to demonstrate competence in the provision of treatment for patients with multidisciplinary needs
  • be able to manage the decision-making and provision of acute-care treatment as required in a clinical setting
  • be able to undertake and abide by the full range of duties and responsibilities of a dentist in accordance with professional, ethical and legal requirements as defined by the Dental Board of Australia.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Clinical oral dental public health
  • Clinical delivery of oral health care to regional, rural and remote communities
  • Comprehensive treatment planning
  • Ethics and jurisprudence

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 160 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

Students will be rostered to complete clinical placement at CSU Dental Clinics in Dubbo, Bathurst, Wagga Wagga and Albury. In addition students will complete 6-10 weeks of placement at an external site which may include an Aboriginal Medical Service or Local Area Health District dental clinic.

Special Resources

Students will be required to travel to workplace learning sites and will be responsible for the associated accommodation and transportation costs. Student are also responsible for ensuring they hold a current First Aid Certificate and meet Working with Children and immunisation requirements.
