English Grammar in Context is a foundational subject that introduces diverse schools of English grammar and explores the place of grammar in learning English as an additional language or dialect. The subject enables students to develop a proficiency of grammar metalanguage in order to further their participation in, and investigation of, grammatical practices in diverse social contexts.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

  • be able to identify, analyse, and discuss grammatical features of different English texts;
  • be able to assess applications of English grammar in professional contexts; and,
  • be able to appropriate grammatical theories in professional practice.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Introduction to various grammatical perspectives, theories, as well as critiques
  • Introduction to grammatical metalangauge that is applicable across theories
  • Grammatical analysis of diverse English texts
  • Critical evaluation of, and reflection on, the application of grammar in TESOL practice
