This subject provides the opportunity for students to undertake work integrated learning experiences that are meaningful to their discipline specialisation.The subject involves authentic work integrated learning in an external industry or community context. This activity may be as varied as engagement with a social media campaign or activism; self-initiated community engagement or advocacy project; volunteerism; community engaged creative work; return to country program; or formal work placement.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate real-world knowledge of a particular industry or community context via critical reflection on their work integrated learning experience;
  • be able to comment on how their academic study relates to a particular industry or community context;
  • be able to articulate the norms and standards of a particular industry or community context;
  • be able to critically reflect on their experience of engaging with a particular industry or community context; and
  • be able to reflect on their own potential career trajectory.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Different forms of engagement that constitute work integrated learning.
  • Critical reflection on engagement with a particular industry or community context.
  • The correlation between academic knowledge and skills and real-world industry or community.

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 10 to 15 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

The subject requires real and authentic engagement in an external industry/community context, however, as per Gannaway and Sheppard (2016), this engagement can be as varied as engagement with a social media campaign or activism, self-initiated community engagement or advocacy project, volunteerism, community engaged creative work, return to country program, or formal work placement.
