This subject provides students with a knowledge of fundamental networking concepts and builds the capacity of students to design, evaluate and configure various network components and protocols. Students will also prepare for Cisco industry certification exams during this subject.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to summarise and demonstrate how computer networks function;
  • be able to design and critically evaluate switched LAN technology solutions to Ethernet networking issues;
  • be able to identify major components of the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) reference model;
  • be able to propose solutions on how to extend the reach of a LAN using existing technologies;
  • be able to classify the appropriate WAN technology based on network requirements;
  • be able to categorise the functions of Wide Area Networks (WANs) and the major devices used in them; and
  • be able to configure and justify switching and routing protocols.
