This subject introduces students to radio news production and the styles and techniques used in producing radio news. Basic radio reporting skills are covered, from synthesising information to writing news copy, through to soundbite selection, newsroom software and mic technique. Students are introduced to authentic newsroom spaces, work practices and experiences.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • understand the radio landscape and its reliance on information programming;
  • be able to generate ideas and gather information for basic radio news stories;
  • be able to evaluate and apply news values in framing stories;
  • be able to demonstrate basic voice skills in radio broadcasting; and
  • be able to write basic news stories for radio/audio platforms.

Special Resources

This subject requires access to specialist recording equipment and studio facilities. On campus students can access these facilities in the School of Communication and Creative Industries authentic learning spaces. Distance students will either need to access the equipment through a proximate community or commercial radio station or purchase suitable equipment for their home.
