MIN401 Theory and Practice of Christian Formation for Ministry (8)

This subject introduces students to the theory and practices of Christian formation for ministry. It invites the student to reflect critically on their own formation to equip them to guide and lead the formation of others for ministry. The student will examine a variety of perspectives and models of Christian formation, and develop a framework for understanding its place within the life of the church. Students will develop a critical understanding of Christian formation practices such as coaching, mentoring, spiritual direction, and professional supervision. The student will also develop an in-depth understanding of ethical issues surrounding practices of formation.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to reflect theologically on the need for and place of Christian formation for ministry, and its significance for the Christian church;
  • be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of different models of Christian formation such as mentoring, coaching, theological education, spiritual direction, and professional supervision;
  • be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of those aspects of Christian formation that distinguish it from models of professional formation beyond the church, such as corporate professional development and executive coaching;
  • be able to demonstrate a critical understanding of ethical issues surrounding Christian formation roles in Christian ministry;
  • be able to demonstrate self-awareness about their own formation and its impact upon the work of formation; and
  • be able to demonstrate communication, self-reflection, goal-setting, and evaluation skills in relation to Christian formation.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Introduction to models of formation for Christian discipleship and ministry found in the biblical witness and the history and traditions of the church
  • Introduction to contemporary practices of Christian formation such as coaching, mentoring, theological education, spiritual direction, and professional supervision
  • Introduction to secular practices of professional formation and their impact on the theory and practices of Christian formation
  • Ethical issues involved in formation for Christian ministry and frameworks for understanding them
  • Tools and skills involved in directing Christian formation
