In this subject students engage critically with the foundational theoretical and practical texts underpinning the subdiscipline of Practical Theology, especially as these relate to ministry practice. Students are enabled to apply cross disciplinary research, critical perspectives and a variety of methods to examine issues and questions of church ministry practice, with a view to developing new approaches and understandings.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of the breadth of thinking represented by the term Practical Theology;
  • be able to demonstrate a critical appreciation of the role of Practical Theology within the context of church ministry;
  • be able to evaluate significant contributors to the field of Practical Theology, especially in relation to the practice of ministry;
  • be able to demonstrate an ability to understand and evaluate theological models of praxis and also apply them appropriately in various ministry contexts;
  • be able to demonstrate a critical comprehension of contemporary issues in ministry from a practical theological perspective;
  • be able to demonstrate an advanced understanding of the relevance of other fields of enquiry to Practical Theology, including indigenous studies, feminist hermeneutics, and the social sciences; and
  • be able to demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills relevant to the discipline of Practical Theology, including critical reflection on ministry practice, social research methods, and appropriate communication skills.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • The place of Practical Theology within the larger discipline of Theology, including its critical engagement with biblical studies, church history, and systematic theology
  • Historical background and current context of Practical Theology, including its relevance to the practice of ministry
  • Critical engagement with Practical Theology's distinctive starting point, methodology, and relation to ministry practice
  • The relationship of Practical Theology to social justice, varied forms of ministry, mission, and evangelism
  • Contemporary approaches to Practical Theology and their relevance to critical reflection on the practice of ministry
  • Critiques of Practical Theological methods and approaches, especially in relation to the practice of ministry
  • The relevance of other fields of enquiry for Practical Theology in relation to various forms of ministry
  • Contemporary issues in ministry examined from a practical theological perspective
