MIN742 Literature Review in Ministry (16)

This subject covers the theory and skills involved in developing a literature review in ministry at the doctoral level. It requires candidates to be thoroughly conversant with the literature of the subject they intend to study, and to understand the major theories, methodological assumptions, key concepts, data-collection techniques, issues, problems, areas of neglect, and newly acquired knowledge within their selected and related disciplines. The literature review provides a rationale for research and a justification of its value and significance for the professional practice of ministry.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to understand the importance and the various roles of the literature review in research;
  • be able to apply a broad range of strategies for developing a literature review;
  • be able to demonstrate an indepth understanding and familiarity with the literature in the approved field of research;
  • be able to understand the major theoretical frameworks in the literature of their chosen field of research;
  • be able to understand the major processes applied in the approved field of research in ministry as demonstrated in the literature;
  • be able to discuss the issues and problems identified in the literature of the approved field of research in ministry;
  • be able to articulate a specific purpose and a clear set of objectives to guide the writing of their literature review; and
  • be able to select, evaluate and synthesise appropriate literature for their chosen topic area and develop this into a review which critically explores the issues in depth and with balance.

- classifying and reading research
- planning for writing an effective literature review
- structuring the literature review
- analysing, synthesising and evaluating information/research
- critical analysis
- writing a literature review.

Residential School

This subject contains a 3 day Compulsory Residential School.The residential school will introduce the students to the processes and critical reflection required for the writing of a literature review. This will be accomplished through lectures, tutorials and extensive library work.
