MRS121 Introductory Medical Radiation Science (8)

Students are introduced to the diverse array of technology required for the medical radiation sciences. A basic technological introduction to x-ray production, radiation detection and radiation safety is undertaken. Students develop an understanding of the technological requirements of quality management, safety and standards. Students explore the principles of evidence based practice, sourcing appropriate information and assessing levels of information accuracy and reliability. Students will plan and commence their professional portfolio to support their development in their chosen specialisation.

  • be able to describe commonly used qualitative and quantitative research methods for the purposes of evidence based practice (MRPBA Domain 4.1);
  • be able to recognise and describe radiation safety and risk management with specific reference to safe radiation practice (MRPBA Domain 5);
  • be able to describe and explain, at an introductory level, the principles of medical radiation physics and instrumentation including X ray production and radiation detection (MRPBA Domain 1.3);
  • be able to describe and explain, at an introductory level, the principles of patient information management systems and 3D datasets for diagnostic image production;
  • be able to demonstrate, at an introductory level, assessment and reflective skills in a range of contexts including clinical problem solving, research and empirical practice, and academic and professional discourse (MRPBA Domain 4);
  • be able to describe the role of the professional portfolio to support ongoing professional development (MRPBA Domain 4); and
