This subject will provide the essential knowledge for students to use creative scientific problem-solving approaches for the nursing care of people with health challenges related to infection, inflammation, the immune system, the musculoskeletal system, the gastrointestinal system, the haematological system, the renal / urinary system and the reproductive system.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to explain common alterations in health including the processes of infection and inflammation, and wound healing;
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of the application of nursing care and collaborative care to prevent and /or manage exacerbations of health challenges including the processes of infection and inflammation, and wound healing;
  • be able to explain the alterations to health for body systems including immune, musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, haematological, renal / urinary, and reproductive systems;
  • be able to explain the underlying pathophysiology of abnormal assessment findings in the context of selected health challenges to the immune, musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, haematological, renal / urinary, and reproductive systems; and
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of the application of nursing care and collaborative care to prevent and /or manage exacerbations of health challenges affecting the immune, musculoskeletal, gastrointestinal, haematological, renal / urinary, and reproductive systems.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • MODULE 1: HEALTH CHALLENGES AND INFECTION, INFLAMMATION AND WOUND HEALING. THIS MODULE INTRODUCES STUDENTS TO THE FOLLOWING:
  • Health challenges that involve infection and inflammation;
  • Processes of infection and inflammation in diverse body systems;
  • Common alterations in health associated with infection and inflammation; and
  • Nursing and interprofessional caring approaches for health challenges involving infection, inflammation and wounds.
  • MODULE 2: HEALTH CHALLENGES TO THE IMMUNE SYSTEM. THIS MODULE INTRODUCES STUDENTS TO THE FOLLOWING:
  • Health challenges that involve the immune system;
  • Nursing care to prevent exacerbations of health challenges involving the immune system;
  • Nursing and interprofessional caring approaches for health challenges involving the immune system; and
  • Links between the pathophysiology of selected health challenges involving the immune system, and their clinical manifestations.
  • MODULE 3: HEALTH CHALLENGES AND THE MUSCULOSKELETAL SYSTEM. THIS MODULE INTRODUCES STUDENTS TO THE FOLLOWING:
  • Health challenges that involve the musculoskeletal body system;
  • Nursing care to prevent exacerbations of health challenges involving the musculoskeletal body system;
  • Nursing and interprofessional caring approaches for health challenges involving the musculoskeletal body system; and
  • Links between the pathophysiology of selected health challenges involving the musculoskeletal body system, and their clinical manifestations.
  • MODULE 4: HEALTH CHALLENGES AND THE GASTROINTESTINAL SYSTEM. THIS MODULE INTRODUCES STUDENTS TO THE FOLLOWING:
  • Health challenges that involve the gastrointestinal body system;
  • Nursing care to prevent exacerbations of health challenges involving the gastrointestinal body system;
  • Nursing and interprofessional caring approaches for health challenges involving the gastrointestinal body system; and
  • Links between the pathophysiology of selected health challenges involving the gastrointestinal body system, and their clinical manifestations.
  • MODULE 5: HEALTH CHALLENGES AND THE HAEMATOLOGICAL SYSTEM. THIS MODULE INTRODUCES STUDENTS TO THE FOLLOWING:
  • Health challenges that involve the haematological body system;
  • Nursing care to prevent exacerbations of health challenges involving the haematological body system;
  • Nursing and interprofessional caring approaches for health challenges involving the haematological body system; and
  • Links between the pathophysiology of selected health challenges involving the haematological body system, and their clinical manifestations.
  • MODULE 6: HEALTH CHALLENGES AND THE RENAL / URINARY SYSTEMS. THIS MODULE INTRODUCES STUDENTS TO THE FOLLOWING:
  • Health challenges that involve the renal and urinary body systems;
  • Nursing care to prevent exacerbations of health challenges involving the renal / urinary body systems;
  • Nursing and interprofessional caring approaches for health challenges involving the renal / urinary body systems; and
  • Links between the pathophysiology of selected health challenges involving the renal / urinary body systems, and their clinical manifestations.
  • MODULE 7: HEALTH CHALLENGES AND THE REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM. THIS MODULE INTRODUCES STUDENTS TO THE FOLLOWING:
  • Health challenges that involve the reproductive system;
  • Nursing care to prevent exacerbations of health challenges involving the reproductive system;
  • Nursing and interprofessional caring approaches for health challenges involving the reproductive system; and
  • Links between the pathophysiology of selected health challenges involving the reproductive system, and their clinical manifestations.
