This subject builds on the use of mindful communication and capacity for human connectedness and legal and ethical aspects of care.  It will examine and explore mental health and well-being, mental disorder and mental illness, and treatment modalities in all settings where nurses practice.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to discuss and evaluate contemporary theories of mental health and mental illness;
  • be able to explain the assessment of mental health challenges, such as distress, crisis, trauma and emergency;
  • be able to identify and analyse factors that impact on the mental health of vulnerable groups with relation to individualising nursing care;
  • be able to examine the legal and ethical aspects of mental health service delivery and the application of these to practice; and
  • be able to analyse emerging modalities for the provision of mental health care in regional and rural settings.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Module 1: Introduction to Mental Health and Mental Illness: Human connectedness and the collaborative consumer narrative;
  • Module 2: Social and Emotional Well-being;
  • Module 3: Assessment of mental health and mental illness;
  • Module 4: Vulnerable populations;
  • Module 5: Use of medications in mental health care;
  • Module 6: Legal and ethical aspects in mental health care;
  • Module 7: Mental health and substance abuse;
  • Module 8: Rural and regional mental health;
  • Module 9: e-Mental Health; and
  • Module 10: Mental health in the inter-professional context.
