OCC105 Occupational Therapy Practice (8)

This subject extends on the foundational concepts of person, environment and occupation from OCC104 to introduce students to the application of those concepts within the profession of occupational therapy. Students will contextualise decision making as integral to their future professional practice and learn how different types of knowledge, models of practice, professional concepts, and ethical frameworks inform the professional decision making process. Students will continue to develop their skills of occupation-based activity analysis by analysing the occupations and activities of other people. They will observe, identify and describe occupational performance and engagement issues. They will apply their decision making skills to propose goals for a client in order to improve the clients occupational performance and engagement.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to make some preliminary assessments of a client, including completing an occupation-based activity analysis, to identify the potential occupational performance and engagement issues of a client;
  • be able to discuss professional decision making processes of an occupational therapist and describe professional reasoning as observed in workshops presented by practitioners;
  • be able to justify their decisions and goals for clients through applying an ethical framework;
  • be able to apply relevant occupational therapy knowledge, models and professional concepts in order to recommend some relevant goals to improve the a client's occupational performance and engagement, and justify those goals with supporting evidence; and
  • be able to justify their decisions and goals for clients through the application of an ethical framework.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Relationship between illness, injury and impairment and occupational performance and engagement;
  • Reflection on person, environment and occupation factors that impact on peoples' occupational performance and engagement;
  • Occupational therapy decision making processes;
  • Occupation-based models;
  • Occupation-focused assessment;
  • Occupation based activity analysis skills; and
  • Occupational therapy enabling skills and strategies.
