This subject provides a comprehensive overview of public sector management in an era of rapid reform and global challenges. It examines the role of the state, the nature of the public sector, and the key concepts and theories used to explain it operation. Key trends and trajectories in public sector reform are explored in Australia and internationally, in relationship to political, economic, legal and social contexts. The effects and challenges of these for management practice is explored and critically evaluated in key areas of public management and public service delivery, including the relationships between public managers and a range of government and non-government stakeholders.

  • The nature and role of public sector and its management, and the key concepts, theories and models used to explain its operation
  • The political, legal, economic and social context in Australia and internationally of public sector management
  • The key trends in public sector reform and the key challenges for public sector management in connection to managing and delivering public services in relation to stakeholders, in a range of areas
  • The role of accountability and ethics in public management and service delivery
