PHC401 Paramedic Intensive Care for Paediatrics (8)

This subject will build upon the student's knowledge of assessment and clinical management and relate this to the paediatric patient following an intensive care approach in the out of hospital environment. The subject will explore emergency paediatric assessment using a structured approach and essential diagnostic techniques as well as outline the role of the paramedic in managing critically ill and injured children.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to integrate knowledge about key growth, anatomical and physiological differences of infants and children with the ability to demonstrate age appropriate assessment and history taking techniques
  • be able to integrate knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology to construct an evidence based approach to the assessment and management of the seriously ill child who presents with alterations to their airway, respiratory, circulatory, neurologic or metabolic systems
  • be able to integrate knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology to construct an evidence based approach to the assessment and management of the seriously ill child who presents with cardiac arrest
  • be able to integrate knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology to construct an evidence based approach to the assessment and management of the seriously injured child who presents with trauma including toxicological emergencies
  • be able to explain how to adapt equipment and techniques of management to meet the needs of paediatric patients in positioning and immobilisation, airway management, ventilation, vascular access, and medication administration
  • be able to explain the out-of-hospital management of special situations that arise in paediatric populations including death and dying, child abuse and neglect, and technology assisted children
