This subject deals with the analysis of circuits containing both linear and non-linear elements. It covers DC and AC circuits, solid state conduction, diodes, transistors and integrated circuits, amplifiers, op-amps, oscillators and introductory digital electronics. The emphasis is on the analysis and application of circuits, rather than circuit design. This subject has a compulsory residential school.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to explain the concepts and perform calculations in circuit analysis using network theorems.
  • be able to explain the concepts and perform calculations in principles of DC and AC circuit analysis.
  • be able to outline the principles and perform calculations on the operation of solid state devices including diodes, transistors and operational amplifiers
  • be able to conduct experiments, analyse data and write laboratory reports on electric circuits and devices.
  • be able to compute and solve problems of a conceptual and quantitative nature in the above areas of electric circuits and devices

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Circuit principles, circuit theorems, RLC circuits, frequency response and resonance;
  • Semiconductors, diode characteristics, zener diode and rectification;
  • Transistors, common emitter and common base modes, emitter follower, current amplification, biasing circuits, load line analysis and frequency response;
  • Amplifiers, class A, B and C operation, power output and efficiency, operational amplifiers;
  • Logic gates, Binary numbers.

Residential School

This subject contains a 3 day Compulsory Residential School.

During the residential school students will undertake and develop the skills associated with the practical aspect of electric circuit measurement and analysis. The students will be provided with a number of tutorials on circuit analysis and will be shown the practical considerations required when choosing components and setting up electric circuits.
