PSY705 Advanced Clinical Psychology (32)

Key areas of clinical specialisation covered in this two year subject include: cultures and clinical practice, culture and behaviour, interpersonal issues in mood and anxiety disorders, the impact that clients' beliefs have on adherence and compliance with treatment, the impact that mental illness has upon parenting capacity, research methodology for applied settings, and advanced psychometric theory. Additional topics chosen by staff and students are examined through "on-line" seminar discussions. Students undertake an advanced placement in a clinical setting where they can combine both their clinical and research skills.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate the ability to undertake research in applied settings, using a range of methodologies and techniques
  • be able to demonstrate the ability to develop and validate psychometric instruments for use in clinical settings
  • be able to demonstrate skill in a broad range of psychological assessments
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of the scientist practitioner model in relation to all professional work
  • be able to demonstrate knowledge of the key areas covered during this subject
  • be able to demonstrate an awareness of the importance of combining clinical and research skills to facilitate advances in clinical practice

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:

- cultures and clinical practice - client beliefs about treatment and its impact on treatment adherence and compliance - psychiatric disability and parenting competency - interpersonal issues in depression and anxiety - advanced psychometric theory (both classical and modern test theory) - advanced topics in qualitative and quantitative research methodologies - on-line seminars presenting topics of interest to staff and enrolled students presenting advanced coverage of topics such as: a) psychopathology b) clinical assessment c) case formulation and diagnosis d) intervention strategies in relation to a broad range of problems and settings e) professional and ethical issues in practice f) professional and practice issues raised in supervision g) dual diagnosis
