SCI174 Current Topics in Health and Biosciences (8)

This subject explores health and bioscience through the lens of current and topical issues. Students investigate the factors affecting health from the molecular to the societal level, examine cells, the building blocks of living things and study the wonder of how different cells work together in functional systems. This subject provides students with experience in locating, evaluating and communicating health and bioscience information and develops scientific knowledge and skills especially in the areas of basic Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics. Further, the subject allows students to reflect on the interdependent relationship between human health and the wider world, both living and nonliving.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to describe the factors affecting health at molecular, individual and societal levels, and explain how health data can be reported at each of these levels;
  • be able to explain the primary functions of cells, tissues and body systems in the context of maintaining health;
  • be able to locate and evaluate sources of information to create a presentation that effectively communicates health and bioscience information to a target audience;
  • be able to analyse and interpret simple health data portrayed in varying contexts; and
  • be able to apply knowledge of cells, tissues and body systems in the context of a working human body.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Introduction to health and the reporting of health issues:
  • -Factors affecting health at molecular, individual and societal levels
  • -Health literacy (including basic applied mathematics and statistics)
  • Structure and function of cells in the human body:
  • -Primary structure and function of cells
  • -Simple biochemical processes
  • Functional Systems in the context of maintaining a healthy human body:
  • -Movement
  • -Gas exchange and excretion
  • -Metabolism and energy production
  • -Integration and control
  • -Reproduction and genetics
