SOC203 Sociology of Youth (8)

This subject will critically evaluate the position of young people in Australian society, and analyse the development of youth policy during the post WWII period in terms of how society constructs youth as a social problem and politically regulates young people's lives. It will also study youth as social agents, eg as consumers and citizens.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Be aware of demographic changes in Australia and the way they affect young people's life chances;
  • Be aware of the ways youth is socially constructed and culturally reproduced;
  • Have examined how the state and other social institutions politically regulate youth;
  • Have examined the politics and strategies of youth protest and other social movements to initiate social change.

Demographic Changes and Images of Young People. The Social Construction and Ideology of Youth. Youth as Consumers and Citizens. Youth, the Labour Market and Unemployment. Youth, Sexuality and the AIDS Crises. Youth, Violence and Power. The Justice System and Juvenile Delinquency. The State and the Politics of Youth. Popular Culture and Youth Protest. Youth/Students Movements and Social Change.
