SPH423 Community and Evidence Based Speech Pathology Practice (16)

In this subject, students will integrate their knowledge, skills and attributes to explore speech pathology practice with individuals and within communities. Students will explore clinical scenarios focusing on clients with coexisting communication and/or swallowing difficulties. They will critically evaluate the impact of geographical, institutional and cultural environments on service provision with a special focus on rural, remote and multicultural contexts. Students will apply their learning to a range of case studies and a community project.

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Clinical reasoning for integration of knowledge, skills and attributes across populations, aetiologies, speech pathology range of practice areas and contexts
  • Ethics, access and equity of speech pathology services: geographical, institutional and cultural barriers and facilitators
  • Rural and remote speech pathology practice in community settings: health promotion, community engagement, telehealth
  • Advocacy as speech pathology practice
  • Evaluation of speech pathology practice: quality improvement frameworks
