SPH424 Community and Evidence Based Speech Pathology Practice (Honours) (12)

This subject has been developed for students enrolled in the Honours program. In this subject, students will integrate their knowledge, skills and attributes to explore speech pathology practice with individuals and within communities. Students will explore clinical scenarios focusing on clients with coexisting communication and/or swallowing difficulties. They will critically evaluate the impact of geographical, institutional and cultural environments on service provision with a special focus on rural, remote and multicultural contexts. Students will apply their learning to a range of case studies and a community project.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

  • be able to integrate collaborative and holistic viewpoints to analyse clinical scenarios and generate hypotheses for client management
  • be able to integrate knowledge of ethics and socio-cultural contexts to critique speech pathology practice
  • be able to explore issues of access and equity of speech pathology services and the impacts on client care

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Clinical reasoning for integration of knowledge, skills and attributes across populations, aetiologies, speech pathology range of practice areas and contexts
  • Ethics, access and equity of speech pathology services: geographical, institutional and cultural barriers and facilitators
  • Rural and remote speech pathology practice in community settings: health promotion, community engagement, telehealth
  • Advocacy as speech pathology practitioner
