Normal Course Duration

Course duration referenced below is the effective time taken to complete a course when studied full time (full time equivalent duration). At Charles Sturt the standard calendar refers to 32 points a session over a 2 session calendar year. The Actual Duration is the time taken to complete the course following the prescribed enrolment pattern. A course's actual duration can be affected by the session calendar (number of sessions undertaken per year) and/or mode (full time, part time or mixed) and credit packages which may have been granted upon admission. Therefore, depending on the prescribed enrolment pattern, mode, calendar utilised and credit awarded a course may take less time or more time to complete than the duration noted as full time equivalent years. Students are advised to consult the Enrolment Pattern to determine the actual duration of study.

Applicants with higher education study

Successful completion of at least two university level subjects (AQF level Associate Degree or higher) demonstrating a reasonable prospect of success through the Grade Point Average (GPA) gained in these studies.

Completed bridging or enabling course

Successful completion of a Tertiary Preparation Course from an Australian University or an accredited provider demonstrating a reasonable prospect of success through the Grade Point Average (GPA) gained in these studies.

Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study

  • A completed AQF Certificate III (or higher) at an accredited provider demonstrating a reasonable prospect of success through the Grade Point Average (GPA) gained in these studies.
  • 50% completion of an AQF Diploma level qualification at an accredited provider demonstrating a reasonable prospect of success through the Grade Point Average (GPA) gained in these studies.

Applicants with work and life experience

Commissioned Officers from Australian Police, Fire, Mercantile Marine, Civil Aviation and Defence Forces (and related) can be admitted on the basis of rank, license, class, length of service and/or competencies achieved.

The Bachelor of Education (K-12) does not form part of the standard Charles Sturt University definition of an articulated set of courses. The Bachelor of Educational Studies may be studied concurrently with this award for those wishing to undertake further studies for an additional secondary teaching area.

Students who have completed 128 points in the Bachelor of Education (K-12) and wish to pursue this opportunity may apply through the Charles Sturt University Admissions Office.

Course Structure

The Bachelor of Education (K-12) is a dual sector program (primary and secondary) and includes studies that will enable graduates to teach in all key learning areas, kindergarten to Year 6. The course also includes subjects (studied as a major) that will enable graduates to teach in one secondary teaching area in years 7-12.

Secondary teaching areas available via this course are HSIE/Business Studies, Mathematics, English, HSIE/Modern History, Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics), HSIE/Geography, HSIE/Legal Studies, PDHPE (on campus in Bathurst only), Drama and Visual Arts.

The Bachelor of Education (K-12) consists of 16 core education subjects (including one zero-point subject and one 16 point subject), one core Indigenous Australian Studies subject, 4 education restricted electives,15 primary and secondary discipline subjects, and 2 secondary curriculum method subjects related to the secondary teaching area. In total, students complete 38 subjects with a total value of 304 points. Subjects have a value of 8 points unless otherwise stated.

Students will study discipline subjects as required for a major in their intended secondary teaching area. However, primary AND secondary discipline subjects will vary depending on the students chosen secondary teaching area (major), as detailed in the sections below.

Requirements for graduates to practice: Yes  on completion of degree successfully attain accreditation with NESA.
Start and end date of accreditation: 01/20  12/2024
Accreditation Status: Conditional. Currently under assessment on new NESA requirement for teaching phonics. Condition status will not impact graduate outcomes.
