This subject focuses on the unique characteristics that need to be considered by paramedics when applying advanced clinical care to paediatric, obstetric and older patients. The subject builds on students' previous clinical knowledge and experience in these areas, to focus on aspects of advanced care that are specific to these special populations.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to critically evaluate and justify the evidence based practices, interventions, and management relating to the care of paediatric, obstetric, and older patients;
  • be able to critically analyse the underlying pathophysiological processes of life threatening and commonly encountered conditions in paediatric, obstetric and older patients with reference to the specific anatomical and physiological differences for each population; and
  • be able to apply a knowledge of pharmacology, including specific pharmacological considerations for paediatric, obstetric and elderly patients, to the selection and administration of medications.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Paediatric (anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology and patient management concepts for life threatening and commonly encountered paediatric conditions).
  • Obstetrics (anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology and patient management concepts for life threatening and commonly encountered obstetric conditions).
  • Older patients (anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology and patient management concepts for life threatening and commonly encountered geriatric conditions).
