This subject is designed to provide a firm foundation for developing skills in scientific communication. Students will learn about and develop academic, information and digital literacy skills as well as numeracy skills relevant to their discipline of study. Students will be introduced to the scientific method and the critical analysis of the scientific literature. This subject will also raise student awareness to evidence-based, professional and ethical issues relating to health and medical sciences.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to apply communication skills appropriate for medical science;
  • be able to demonstrate information, digital and academic literacy and numeracy skills appropriate for undergraduate medical sciences;
  • be able to describe and apply the scientific method;
  • be able to interpret and critically analyse a scientific paper;
  • be able to solve mathematical and chemical calculations applicable to health sciences;
  • be able to describe evidence-based health paradigms; and
  • be able to explain professional and ethical issues related to medical science including medical science research.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • COMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION SKILLS: library familiarisation, literature searches, written communication, scientific report writing; academic literacy skills including referencing and issues of plagiarism;
  • SCIENTIFIC METHOD AND INTRODUCTION TO EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: including critical analysis of the scientific literature;
  • LABORATORY AND CHEMISTRY MATHEMATICS: including introductory data management, manipulation and presentation; and
  • PROFESSIONAL AND ETHICAL ISSUES: Evidence-based practice, research (quantitative vs. qualitative), patient confidentiality, patenting, research ethics, professional development, professional associations and membership.
