BMS252 Practical Haematology 1 (2)

Students will conduct full blood count (FBC), preparation, staining and examination of blood films, as well as coagulation screening tests. Students will perform detailed morphological examinations on blood films including anaemias and leukaemias, and will be introduced to automation in the haematology laboratory in addition to basic blood banking practices. Students will be required to demonstrate their abilities in performing routine haematology tests. This practical subject will be run in a residential school format with both internal and distance cohorts attending the practical sessions.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Topic 1: Manual full blood parameter estimation;
  • Topic 2: Manual full blood counting and staining;
  • Topic 3: Investigation of anaemias;
  • Topic 4: Investigation of leucocyte abnormalities - acute and chronic leukaemias;
  • Topic 5: Coagulation screening tests;
  • Topic 6: Investigation of malaria;
  • Topic 7: Introduction to immunohaematology; and
  • Topic 8: Introduction to automation in haematology.

Residential School

This subject contains a 4 day Compulsory Residential School.

This subject is a micro-session practical subject and the residential school will provide students with skills in haematology. Students will learn practical techniques such as, but not limited to, performing full blood count (FBC), preparation, staining and examination of blood films as well as conducting coagulation screening tests. Students will be required to demonstrate their abilities in performing routine haematology tests.
