BMS424 Integrated Clinical Placement for Medical Laboratory Science 3 (8)

In this subject students will complete a third supervised clinical placement within a pathology setting and present on their findings and proposed ideas. This provides students with the opportunity to integrate the theoretical knowledge gained in the subjects studied and practice and consolidate their skills in a clinical environment whilst being innovate with current workplace issues. Students will be required to demonstrate their ability to reflect and critically evaluate their practice. Students will need to reflect on the AIMS Competency-based Standards for Medical Scientists around the work they have completed in the placement and show the units they have been able to improve in since their second placement. Students will complete 140 placement hours as part of this subject and this completes the placement requirements for the course.

While on placement students will work with laboratory or discipline managers to identify a current laboratory issue. Students will observe how this plays a role in the day to day running of the laboratory. Students will then present findings and solutions to a panel where their ideas/research and solution implementation will be discussed. Students will learn and continue to build on:

  • Communication skills and professional behavior
  • Maintenance and promotion of safe work practices
  • Professional accountability
  • Sustainability in the workplace

During placement students will engage in reflective practice and develop a presentation that will be presented to the lab manager and subject coordinator.
