CLS300 Advanced Cardiology and Paramedic Practice (8)

This subject aims to extend the students' knowledge and clinical skills required for the care of the patient experiencing acute health emergencies focusing on cardiovascular and respiratory emergencies. Students will need to integrate pathophysiological principles and assessment findings to implement management plans for the patient with cardiovascular and respiratory disease or ventilation-perfusion failure.

Enrolment is restricted to students in the Bachelor of Clinical Practice (Paramedic), Bachelor of Paramedicine, Bachelor of Paramedicine (Honours).



Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to explain and critique the evidence base of current management protocols and guidelines for cardiovascular emergencies;
  • be able to make informed evidence-based clinical decisions in cardiovascular emergencies;
  • be able to apply a knowledge of the characteristics, consequences, and pathophysiology of cardiovascular and respiratory emergencies to the treatment of patients;
  • be able to perform advanced clinical protocols and procedures for patients with cardiovascular and respiratory emergencies; and
  • be able to interpret basic, intermediate, and advanced ECG tracings and use these to inform patient care.


This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Pathophysiology of cardiovascular and respiratory emergencies;
  • The management of cardiovascular, respiratory and medical emergencies at an advanced skill level according to Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines;
  • Patient assessment, history taking and data collection across the lifespan;
  • ECG monitoring, analysis and arrhythmia interpretation;
  • The 12-lead ECG and thrombolytic therapy within the context of the patient presenting with signs and symptoms of myocardial ischemia or injury;
  • Indications, methods of care and complications related to cardiac pacing and implanted defibrillation devices;
  • Clinical decision making related to the termination of resuscitative efforts for a patient in cardiac arrest;
  • Airway management and protection, ventilation and oxygen delivery systems; and
  • Use of advanced ventilation-perfusion diagnostic technology (including pulse oximetry, end-tidal CO2 detection, CPAP, and peak expiratory flow testing) and interpretation of test results.

Residential School

This subject contains a 5 day Compulsory Residential School.

The Bachelor of Clinical Practice (Paramedic) is currently accredited by the Council of Ambulance Authorities (CAA). In aligning to the accreditation policy, face to face time is required when teaching and assessing clinical practice skills. The online subject and internal subject must have equity in teaching standards.

The purpose of the residential school is to demonstrate and practice clinical skills in a safe environment for the student. Allowing them an opportunity to receive timely feedback and support from the hands on experience. CLS300 is an advanced cardiology subject where students will learn and practice advanced assessment and management strategies for those suffering from a cardiovascular complaint. Many of these skills require supervised practice before allowing the student autonomy in the clinical environment.

Current activities that will be included into the res school for CLS300 are

  • synchronised cardioversion in a simulated environment
  • transcutaneous pacing and other advanced electrophysiology skills in a simulated environment
  • advance patient assessment strategies including reading of 12 lead ECGS
  • advance cardiac procedures in the simulated environment. 

Special Resources

Travel to and accommodation is required for distance education students attending the compulsory residential school at a CSU campus.
All students are required to have a lab coat, safety glasses and covered footwear for lab based practicals.
