CLS406 Essentials of Paramedicine: Transition to Practice (8)

This subject sets the foundation for future clinical practice by requiring students to integrate and consolidate knowledge and skills developed in preceding subjects, and to demonstrate that they have autonomous clinical judgement and evidence based decision-making skills that apply to real-world situations. This subject focuses on ensuring students are prepared and can demonstrate the requirements to successfully transition into professional practice.

Students will be required to attend a compulsory residential school in order to demonstrate and be assessed in applying professional clinical judgement and practical skills in relation to appropriate patient centred care.

No offerings have been identified for this subject in 2022.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to reflect on and apply knowledge from previous and current professional studies to the development and improvement of paramedic practice, and analyse individual learning needs to facilitate the transition to professional practice;
  • be able to critically evaluate own preparedness for practice against the Paramedicine Boards Professional Capabilities for registered paramedics;
  • be able to practise with accountability evidenced by the application of knowledge of legal and ethical issues, patient information systems, and regulatory requirements in paramedic settings;
  • be able to apply the principles of patient advocacy in out of hospital settings within the legal, ethical, and regulatory contexts of paramedicine;
  • be able to make evidence informed autonomous clinical judgements about culturally safe, appropriate patient centred care in the treatment of patients from diverse populations and First Nations peoples of Australia; and
  • be able to apply skills learnt during the course in a simulated paramedic environment, utilising a simulation ambulance and all other paramedic equipment to assess, plan and treat various patient presentations.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Application of paramedic clinical practice guidelines, assessments, evaluation and modification for patients in the out of hospital environment.
  • Legal, ethical and regulatory issues in paramedicine.
  • Transition and development as a paramedic practitioner: development of lifelong learning practices and creation of a portfolio of skills and reflection for registration and continuous professional development.
  • Patient advocacy in the out of hospital environment.
  • Culturally safe, appropriate patient centred care in the treatment of patients from diverse populations and First Nations peoples of Australia.

Residential School

This subject contains a 4 day Compulsory Residential School.

Residential school is compulsory. Students who require supplemental support for practical skills improvement will be offered further time in the simulation ambulance throughout the sessional period. Students will be able to roster themselves onto Simbulance days/shifts which will coincide with days/shifts completed by second year undergraduate students. These days are completed at one of the two Charles Sturt campuses and involve students responding to cases utilising the Simbulance and/or other equipment and provide patient care to a simulated patient. Students are then involved in debriefing of the case with peers and academic staff.

Special Resources
