This subject introduces students to the analysis of media texts, including cinema, television, news, video games, and the internet. Students will learn how to describe and analyse media texts using a range of methods including semiotics, discourse analysis, and content analysis. Students will be able to identify and critique the power and ideology contained in media representations.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to recall and explain the foundations of media studies;
  • be able to describe, interpret and analyse the language forms, features, structures and techniques used in various media texts and evaluate their appropriateness for purpose, audience and context; and
  • be able to identify power and ideology in media representations.
