COM240 Envisioning the Digital Society (8)

In this subject you will learn to critically examine and contribute to debates about a society that is primarily based upon information technology, as it relates to professional communication practice.  You will focus on social media's impact on the economic, political and social structures and practices that apply to the sub-disciplines of strategic communication, news and media and design and content creation.  Drawing on scholarly and industry research you will evaluate opposing perspectives to develop as a critically informed communication professional.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Be able to demonstrate knowledge of debates about the impact of information technology on society as it relates to the sub disciplines of strategic communication or news and media or design and content creation;
  • Be able to critically examine how information technology has transformed economic, political and social structures and practices as these relate to either strategic communication, news and media or design and content creation;
  • Be able to communicate your understanding of the impact of social media on our society as it relates to either strategic communication, news and media, or design and content creation.
  • Be able to work collaboratively in a team to investigate a contemporary issue.

  • Legislation and regulation for digital societies
  • The evolution and impact of social media
  • Our digital society and big data
  • The use of social media in communication practice
  • How social media is used in strategic practice
  • How social media is used in news and media
  • How social media is used in content creation and distribution
  • The principles of working in a group
