Students explore fundamental research principles that underpin script and character analysis towards the conceptualisation and construction of stage and screen costume with a focus on design for performance. Traditional and non-traditional materials, sustainability, and design techniques to progress students from design-brief to realisation are covered.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to apply fundamental design skills required to perform a range of roles in stage and screen costume departments;
  • be able to undertake basic script and character analysis as a costume design process;
  • be able to apply a range of design techniques in response to design briefs;
  • be able to translate two dimensional design into three dimensional forms;
  • be able to apply appropriate workplace health and safety principles in a range of workshop environments; and
  • be able to identify and describe basic sustainability concerns in costume design contexts.
