DOH115 Oral Anatomy and Histology (12)

This subject is a year-long subject within the broad area of biological dental science. The subject introduces craniofacial anatomy, the human dentitions and teeth in the contexts of form and function. The detailed anatomical morphology of teeth, microscopic structure of the dental tissues, their supporting tissues, tooth calcification, emergence-eruption, dental embryology and the structure and function of the oral mucosa, the salivary glands and the temporomandibular joint are dealt with in detail.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to use discipline-specific terminology to describe and identify the macroscopic and microscopic features of the teeth, oral tissues and related structures and their functions;
  • be able to apply discipline-specific knowledge to identify, explain, and discuss the macroscopic and microscopic features and functions of the human dentitions;
  • be able to apply the knowledge of general and oral embryology to explain and discuss the developmental processes of calcification, emergence and eruption sequences and timings of human dentitions in the context of dental age and chronological age;
  • be able to apply the knowledge of anatomy, histology, and embryology to explain, discuss, and identify the macroscopic and microscopic features, functions and development of oral and related tissues; and
  • be able to explain the principles of evidence-based practice and epidemiology.
