DOH337 Foundations of Dental Clinical Practice 3 (24)

This subject is designed to provide students with the opportunity to participate in the provision of patient-centred dental clinical care. There is a strong emphasis on diagnosis and evidence-based treatment planning and the completion of simple clinical procedures, including the administration of oral local anaesthetics, non-complex periodontic and restorative procedures, the relief of pain and the provision of uncomplicated removable dental prostheses.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate foundation knowledge and an understanding of evidence-based practice and patient-centred care in the examination, diagnosis and treatment planning of cases in the Year 3 open clinic;
  • be able to demonstrate foundation knowledge and apply clinical skills relevant to the provision of safe oral local anaesthesia;
  • be able to demonstrate foundation knowledge and apply clinical skills relevant to the provision of relief of pain, conservative pulpal therapy and simple endodontic treatment; and
  • be able to demonstrate foundation knowledge and apply clinical skills relevant to the management of simple restorative, periodontic and removable prosthodontic cases.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Treatment planning and evidence-based practice;
  • Periodontics;
  • Non-complex restorative dentistry;
  • Uncomplicated removable prosthodontics;
  • The administration of local anaesthetics;
  • Relief of pain;
  • Simple endodontic procedures;
  • Infection control;
  • Occupational health and safety;
  • Ethical and professional behaviour; and
  • The interpretation of panoramic and intraoral radiographs.

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 14 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

Students will be timetabled to attend the Charles Sturt Dental Clinic on a weekly basis and will complete, under supervision, the clinical examination, diagnosis, treatment planning and management of a range of dental cases.

Special Resources

Students attending compulsory workplace learning placements are responsible for all associated travel, accommodation and required resources.

Clinical placement in this subject takes place in the Orange campus dental clinics. Prior to starting placement students will be required to obtain a Senior First Aid Certificate, proof of appropriate immunisation, and National Police and Working with Children checks.
