DOH345 Oral-Maxillofacial Pathology (8)

This subject focuses on the aetiology, pathogenesis, histopathological, clinical and, where relevant, the radiographic features of diseases affecting the teeth, gums, oral mucosa, subjacent oral soft tissues, the jawbones and salivary glands. Emphasis in the subject is placed on the more common or important oral-maxillofacial conditions that may be encountered in general dental practice. The basic principles of clinical management, including description of diagnostic tests and their relevance, are described in relation to the more common-important diseases

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to describe and discuss the causes, pathology and clinical features of common and important diseases of the oral-maxillofacial region
  • be able to demonstrate an ability to formulate basic differential diagnoses based on patient history and clinical-radiographic-histopathological information
  • be able to describe or discuss the clinical management of common and important oral-maxillofacial diseases and conditions

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Introduction to developmental anomalies of the teeth and oral maxillofacial region
  • The histopathology of dental caries
  • Non-infectious inflammatory diseases of the oral mucosa
  • Infectious diseases of the oral mucosa
  • Odontogenic and non- odontogenic cysts of the oral region
  • Odontogenic tumours
  • Hyperplastic (reactive) lesions of the oral mucosa
  • Diseases of the jawbones
  • Benign and malignant neoplasms of the mouth and oral region
  • Diseases of the salivary glands
  • Diagnostic techniques in the diagnosis of maxillofacial disease
