In this subject students will continue to develop competencies in a range of minor oral surgical procedures. Students will continue to master their knowledge and skills in simple exodontia. This subject will also include a study of the role and application of therapeutics in patient care. Part of the subject will include introductory concepts in surgical aspects of implant dentistry.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate understanding and clinical competence relevant to the provision of simple minor oral surgical procedures
  • be able to demonstrate the clinical application of pharmacological principles with particular relevance to optimal oral and dental health.
  • be able to demonstrate the knowledge and clinical application of periodontal surgical procedures in periodontal and restorative case management.
  • be able to demonstrate the knowledge and clinical application of endodontic periradicular microsurgery
  • be able to demonstrate developing knowledge and continuing development of skills relevant to the provision of simple safe local anaesthesia
  • be able to demonstrate continued development of clinical competence relevant to the management of simple dental extractions
  • be able to demonstrate the ability to apply dental therapeutics competently within the clinical setting
  • be able to demonstrate foundation knowledge in assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning for surgical aspects of implant dentistry.

  • Patient selection for implants, implant selection and implant management
  • Antibiotics, antifungals and antivirals
  • Antithrombotics
  • Wound healing
