15 hours of participation in a placement in a local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community
organisation or an authorised cultural immersion program.
This subject has been designed to facilitate opportunities for students in the Bachelor and Master of
Teaching degrees to develop respectful relationships with their local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
community through a minimum of 15 hours of participation in a placement in a local Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander community organisation or an authorised cultural immersion program. The local Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander community cultural education experience is part of the cultural competence
program embedded within the degree. It allows for authentic engagement with the community to broaden
students' understanding of issues confronting the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community
and to further understand the role of education in achieving reconciliation and improving educational
outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.
