EHR311 Advanced Human Exercise Physiology (8)

This subject applies physiological principles to explain acute responses to exercise and chronic adaptations to training, with emphasis on the muscular and cardiovascular systems. The laboratory component is designed to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to conduct standard physical fitness assessments, which are applicable for employment in clinical, corporate and community fitness programs, as well as exercise and sports science research. It is compulsory for students studying online to attend a three (3) day residential school for this subject.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to explain the cardiovascular and respiratory responses to acute and chronic exercise of various modes and intensities;
  • be able to evaluate evidence-based literature to determine best practice recovery strategies and ergogenic aids for exercise performance;
  • be able to explain the role of fatigue during exercise and the influence on behaviour;
  • be able to explain the biochemical and molecular responses to exercise and the influence on training adaptations;
  • be able to analyse results from laboratory-based projects and deduce appropriate findings and recommendations; and
  • be able to undertake appropriate exercise physiology-based testing for healthy and athletic populations autonomously.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Theoretical and practical skills for the evaluation of cardiac and pulmonary function, muscular strength and endurance, and autonomic function;
  • Recovery strategies and ergogenic aids to improve exercise performance;
  • Biochemical and molecular responses to exercise; and
  • Theoretical and practical skills to undertake exercise testing to inform exercise prescription.
