Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to:
  • recognise the physical and psychological considerations involved in injury prevention and the role of protective athletic devices;
  • provide acute care for an injured conscious and unconscious athletic participant;
  • understand the mechanisms underlying the healing response and the pathophysiology of musculoskeletal injury;
  • determine strategies to prevent injury as well as rehabilitative goals for the injured participant;
  • utilise exercise as well as various therapeutic modalities in the rehabilitative process.

This subject will cover the following topics:

- Physical and psychological factors for injury prevention. - Role of sports conditioning and nutrition. - Recreational and competition protective devices. - Emergency procedures and evaluation of athletic injuries. - Wound dressing and taping. - Physiology of the injury response. - Healing of skeletal and soft tissues. - Therapeutic modalities in the rehabilitation program. - Psychological considerations for rehabilitation. - The role of exercise in the rehabilitative process. - Rehabilitation programs for common athletic injuries.
