The primary focus of this subject is to provide the scientific background, knowledge and assessment skills related to meeting the nutritional needs of healthy active people. This subject will address current concepts and controversies relating to both health and sports nutrition by linking information in the fields of exercise science and nutrition. This subject will also explore the role of nutrition in optimising training responses and adaptations, sports performance, health and well-being, and disease prevention in both children and adults.

Assumed Knowledge

Students must have a comprehensive understanding of anatomy and physiology as well as the foundation knowledge of nutrition for health prior to undertaking this subject.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to describe the relationship between nutrition and the energy demands of athletes compared to healthy individuals;
  • be able to critique current sports nutrition literature;
  • be able to identify individuals at nutritional risk based on basic dietary analysis;
  • be able to use current guidelines to provide appropriate general advice on nutrition for athletes and healthy individuals;
  • be able to determine appropriate referral pathways for individuals who require further specialised nutrition advice;
  • be able to explain the importance of fluid and electrolytes and methods of hydration monitoring;
  • be able to explain the appropriate use of nutritional supplements and ergogenic aids;
  • be able to explain common sports related nutrition concerns to lay people; and
  • be able to recognise the varied nutritional needs of individuals with known risk factors for, or presence of, varied lifestyle diseases that are pertinent to most developed countries.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Sourcing and critiquing nutrition literature.
  • Nutrition requirements for healthy individuals (NRVs/ADG/AGHE).
  • Nutrition requirements for athletes, including special needs for individual sports and vegetarians.
  • Nutrition requirements of individuals with risk factors for, or presence of, lifestyle disease.
  • Assessment of nutritional risk, including basic dietary analysis.
  • Translation of nutrition evidence into practical general advice for lay people.
  • Referral pathways for nutrition advice – including nutrition scope of practice.
