EMH502 Curriculum Studies: Primary HASS (8)

This subject prepares students to teach in the primary curriculum area, Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) and the NSW Key Learning Area of Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE). The subject aims to give students an understanding of the relevant syllabus documents and the rationale for teaching HASS, wider research skills, an understanding of the inquiry process, and knowledge and understanding of practical approaches for teaching HASS/HSIE in the classroom.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to plan learning experiences that comply with the requirements of HASS and the NSW History K-10 Syllabus and NSW Geography Syllabus, Early Stage 1-Stage 3;
  • be able to discuss and apply a range of strategies and resources for teaching and assessing Primary History and Geography in a sequence of learning;
  • be able to critically discuss a rationale for teaching HASS in primary classrooms, which includes inquiry-based and place-based pedagogies;
  • be able to design engaging learning experiences that connect the HASS curricula with the community;
  • be able to plan and use a range of literacy, numeracy and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) capabilities in HASS learning programs;
  • be able to embed cross-curriculum priorities and general capabilities in HASS learning sequences; and
  • be able to incorporate meta-cognitive skills into planning and teaching decisions as a means of building reflective practice.

  • Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS) curricula in Australia
  • The scope and continuum of the NSW HSIE learning area (Early Stage 1-Stage 4)
  • History curriculum and pedagogy
  • Geography curriculum and pedagogy
  • Place-based learning in HSIE
  • Developing ethical understandings and values education
  • Civics, Citizenship and Human Rights Education (values underpinning democratic and multicultural societies)
  • Comparative study of religion
  • Interdisciplinary HASS, including Economics and Business Studies
  • Cross-Curriculum priorities, (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures, languages and Language Groups, Asia and Australia's engagement with Asia, and Sustainability)
  • Inquiry-based learning in HASS
  • Planning and Assessment for the diverse primary classroom
  • Focus on backward design
  • General Capabilities in Humanities and Social Sciences (including Literacy and Numeracy in HSIE)
