EML306 English Curriculum: Primary (8)

This subject develops and consolidates students' understanding of English content knowledge in language, literature and literacy to enable Stage 2 and Stage 3 students to appreciate the value of the English language for communication, knowledge and enjoyment. Students revise and build on their understandings of current research in language, literature and literacy, including the explicit teaching of speaking, listening, reading, writing, viewing and representing. Students will examine a range of theoretical perspectives and models for teaching English in order to meet the specific needs of diverse learners. Learning experiences will promote students' abilities to critically analyse diverse texts, including multimodal texts, and a wide range of teaching and learning resources. Students will design sequential learning experiences aligned with the NSW K-10 English syllabus, including assessment strategies, for Stage 2 and Stage 3 students.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to examine and apply, in their planning for teaching, the English Syllabus content knowledge in the strands of language, literature and literacy with a specific focus on Stage 2 and Stage 3 students;
  • be able to select and evaluate a range of resources, including digitally based materials, to support the explicit teaching of speaking, listening, reading, writing, viewing and representing;
  • be able examine a range of theoretical perspectives and select appropriate models of teaching to support the teaching of English content knowledge in contemporary Stage 2 and Stage 3 classrooms;
  • be able to plan sequential Stage 2 and Stage 3 literacy instruction incorporating reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing;
  • be able to create and incorporate a range of literacy assessments to inform instruction and offer focused feedback to learners; and
  • be able to differentiate instruction in English for varying learning needs, within the guidelines of the NSW English Syllabus and other State and Federal curriculum resources.

  • Differentiating instruction for inclusion
  • Effective assessment practices
  • The NSW English Syllabus, Australian Curriculum English, and state and national resources that support literacy planning and teaching in Australian Stage 2 and Stage 3 classrooms
