EMT411 Using ICT with Children (8)

This subject considers the relationship between technology and children, and the use of technology in and beyond the early childhood and primary classrooms. Students will relate a child's socio-emotional development to new digital technologies as tools for learning and teaching. Media literacy in technology-supported classrooms will be emphasized through programming for learning and applying strategies for safely integrating new technologies using innovative practices. Students will become skilled in learning and teaching about children and digital technologies specifically in regard to relationships, ethical behaviours, health and wellbeing, citizenship, and play and pedagogy.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to use digital technologies to promote safe and ethical social interactions and collaborative learning between children, peers and adults;
  • be able to plan digital technology experiences for children that promote health, wellbeing, creativity and learning, including tasks that explore, evaluate, collect, organise and display data according to appropriate syllabus document requirements;
  • be able to plan learning opportunities about children's digital rights relating to socioeconomic, geographic, gender and culturally based contexts;
  • be able to understand the proactive adult supervision required for children's online activities, including the use of filters and restrictions on devices and networks;
  • be able to plan innovative opportunities for all children to explore and experiment with a diverse range of applications and digital technologies in a safe environment;
  • be able to model active decision making regarding digital technology mediated learning for use with and by children, collaboratively and independently; and
  • be able to select and evaluate software for educational use as well as for the purpose of planning, assessing, student profiling and reporting.
