ENG290 Engineering Portfolio - Junior Cadet (28)

In this subject, junior cadet engineers document their engineering learning and experiences gained in their first workplace or during their time on campus, to claim, demonstrate and justify that they are progressively obtaining the skills and attributes expected of an engineering graduate. This is performed referring to a list of essential engineering skills and competencies, divided into categories, with an ultimate aim of achieve all these essential competencies by the completion of all Engineering Portfolio subjects. Accordingly, junior cadet engineers assess sample/exemplar competency claims using a rubric.  Additionally they can peer review the work of other cadets and write their own claims of competency supported by evidence, based on the skills, experiences and knowledge they have gained during undergraduate studies. The competency claims will form an introductory professional engineering portfolio corresponding to the stated essential engineering skills.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • synthesise the essential engineering skills developed through classroom and workplace tasks and experiences;
  • justify competence of essential engineering skills through documented accounts and evidence;
  • provide evidence of their level of competence in conceptual understanding of the mathematics, numerical analysis, statistics, or computer and information science principles corresponding to engineering practice;
  • provide evidence of their level of competence in the application of established engineering methods to broadly-defined problems;
  • provide evidence of their level of competence in the selection and application of a range of engineering tools, techniques, and resources to practical problems;
  • provide evidence of their level of competence in the engineering design processes in an industry context;
  • provide evidence of their level of competence in recognising their information needs, and in locating, evaluating and using the information effectively; and
  • provide evidence of their level of competence in effective written and verbal communication through a range of different communication channels.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Development of an introductory portfolio of engineering competencies gained on campus and at workplace;
  • Development of professional engineering competency claim;
  • Collection and documentation of evidence to support claims;
  • Development of a professional engineering portfolio as a reflective practitioner;
  • Self- and peer-evaluation against essential engineering skills.
