This subject allows students to extend their technical knowledge of civil engineering through further self-directed study. This could be through additional material offered by CSU staff, research seminars, or cross-institutional enrolment in other engineering programs.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • Fluently and critically apply engineering techniques, tools and resources;
  • Possess a comprehensive, theory based understanding of the underpinning natural and physical sciences and the engineering fundamentals applicable to the engineering discipline;
  • Have an in-depth mastery of, and capacity to reflectively critique and use, a specialist body of knowledge within the engineering discipline; and
  • Demonstrate achievement of aggregate objectives in the individual topics chosen by the student.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • This subject contains 16 points of advanced learning within civil engineering;
  • The syllabus for this subject will vary entirely depending upon the specialisation explored by the student. Prior to commencing this subject, students must have completed a learning plan including Schedule C, and one specialty schedule (G, Q, S, or W) which includes those topics from one or more branches on the topic tree to be competent in an area of specialisation within civil engineering (i.e. Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, etc.). 16 points in this subject is beyond the 600 topics completed in ENG471 or ENG473;
  • A minimum of 50% of the learning plan (the equivalent to one 8 point post-graduate subject) must be advanced study within the selected area of specialisation. This could be proved by a credit or higher in a postgraduate subject from another institution, or from a combination of specialised professional development activities equivalent to the learning contained in one post-graduate subject;
  • A specialty schedule (G, Q, S, or W) may count as a maximum of 50% of the learning plan if not completed as a part of ENG471 or ENG473;
  • Schedule C comprises the minimum set of topics from all branches on the topic tree necessary to graduate every Charles Sturt professional civil engineer degree, regardless of specialisation;
  • Schedule G comprises the minimum set of topics from all branches on the topic tree necessary to graduate a Charles Sturt professional civil engineer degree with the Geotechnical Engineering specialisation;
  • Schedule Q comprises the minimum set of topics from all branches on the topic tree necessary to graduate a Charles Sturt professional civil engineer degree with the Water Quality Engineering specialisation;
  • Schedule S comprises the minimum set of topics from all branches on the topic tree necessary to graduate a Charles Sturt professional civil engineer degree with the Structural Engineering specialisation; and
  • Schedule W comprises the minimum set of topics from all branches on the topic tree necessary to graduate a Charles Sturt professional civil engineer degree with the Water Resources Engineering specialisation.
