EPT446 Analysing Learning: The Early Years (8)

In the first part of this subject students will focus on the analysis and interpretation of documentation of children's learning and explore various assessment practices relevant to the early childhood context. In the second part of the subject, students will undertake 25 days of professional experience in an early childhood setting where students will participate in learning experiences that require them to; observe and interact with children, gather, analyse and interpret observations and documentation, design learning experiences, assess, evaluate and reflect on their teaching and the contribution of this experience to their professional growth.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to analyse and interpret observations and documentation as evidence about what children aged birth to five years know, can do and understand;
  • be able to analyse the learning of children aged birth to five years by applying a range of theoretical perspectives;
  • be able to demonstrate authentic and ethical assessment for learning to inform teaching and learning of children aged birth to five years;
  • be able to evaluate learning plans through authentic annotations and amendments to plans following the implementation of learning experiences;
  • be able to build professional relationships with children aged birth to five years and interpersonal engagement with professional stakeholders within the learning context;
  • be able to develop a situational analysis of the early childhood context, including descriptive observations and analyses of children, staff and the environment to inform practice and learning design; and
  • be able to reflect on their professional development through the compilation of a teaching portfolio demonstrating their achievement of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at graduate level.

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 25 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

Attendance at an early childhood service for 25 days where students will be involved with interpreting and analysing childrens learning, meeting childrens different learning needs and assessing their learning. They will plan effective pedagogies for teaching the full range of early childhood learners. They will communicate with families, educators, other professionals and community members and reflect and evaluate their learning
