EPT510 Professional Experience: Positive Primary Classroom Environments (8)

This subject introduces students to the role of the teacher in creating positive classroom environments for a range of diverse learners through online study with an embedded classroom experience focus. The professional experience component consists of 20 days of supervised placement in a Primary K-2 or 3-6 setting comprising of five lead-in days and a three week block. Students will apply their learning from the online modules while under the professional supervision of a practising classroom teacher. They will develop and apply their knowledge of a range of appropriate classroom management strategies to their professional practice as they design, implement and evaluate context appropriate lessons in key learning areas. They will apply strategies that promote positive relationships within the classroom, as well as begin to apply strategies to manage student behaviour. Students will also provide evidence of their progression in developing competence across the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers at a Graduate level.

This placement subject is available to students enrolled in the Master of Teaching (Primary) course and should not be before the eighth subject studied in the course.

This subject is not available to students who have completed EPT432 or EEA406 or EPT447 as they share similar content.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

  • Characteristics of primary school aged learners
  • Characteristics of positive learning environments including engagement, curriculum and inclusion and participation
  • Proactive and reactive theories of classroom management
  • Verbal and non-verbal communication to support student engagement
  • Strategies for managing challenging behaviours and bullying
  • Intra-personal awareness of self as a teacher
  • Reflecting on the professional experience

Workplace Learning

This subject contains a 20 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

This subject has an embedded professional experience requiring 20 days of attendance in a primary school for students who have completed the 10 day placement in EPT455 and 25 days for students who completed the subject EML440. Students are required to complete a total of 60 days of professional experience in the course to meet accreditation requirements. During this experience students will focus on proactive and reactive strategies for managing positive classroom environments and the use of effective verbal and non-verbal communication to support the learning needs of a diverse range of students.
