ESA512 International Educational Leadership (8)

Drawing upon comparative international perspectives, this subject will examine selected educational trends, practices, issues and debates from around the world. The subject will consist of an in-depth examination of the theoretical and philosophical assumptions underlying educational and leadership issues. Students are encouraged to view their existing educational contexts from a wide range of perspectives (familiar and less familiar) applied across international settings. Reflection will be undertaken on the forces of globalisation that influence their educational thinking and leadership.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to analyse the impact of socio-cultural, political and economic factors on educational issues;
  • be able to examine educational issues and practices from a comparative perspective;
  • be able to evaluate local and international education challenges from a range of perspectives; and
  • be able to formulate a plan using global research/practice to analyse and evaluate a local issue of practice.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Comparative education: A brief overview;
  • The 'hard questions' being faced by education systems around the world;
  • International comparisons: contemporary contexts;
  • Standardised testing: Assessment and accountability;
  • Equity and educational justice;
  • Globalisation; and
  • Alternative conceptions and whole-system reform.
