This subject discusses the role and value of research in teacher librarianship, with a focus on informing evidence-based practice. It examines the role of research in professional practice, the major philosophies of research, the components of a research study, and major research methods and techniques that may apply. This provides students with the background to evaluate the research literature, interpret research results and design their own project in practice.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to justify and reflect on the role of research in evidence-based practice in teacher librarianship, and educational and information studies more broadly;
  • be able to explain the role of research paradigms in the design and interpretation of research;
  • be able to critique completed research and apply research evaluation skills appropriately in educational and information environments; and
  • be able to develop appropriate research methodologies for application in school education settings.
