GRP225 Experimental Design (8)

This subject will explore ways of combining digital applications with a variety of creative techniques and processes. The emphasis will be on developing a thorough analysis of a design challenge and exploring form, function and approach leading to innovative and imaginative solutions. The students will document and critically examine all stages of the project from their initial concepts through to completion. Sustainability, as well as cultural and ethical issues, will be considered throughout the design process.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to critically analyse and validate various experimental techniques and processes as a means to producing design solutions;
  • be able to critically evaluate ideas from various perspectives (designer, client and consumer) throughout the design process using prototyping, user testing, self-evaluation and critiquing;
  • be able to research, design, develop and produce a resolved design outcome in the context of contemporary design practice;
  • be able to apply the principles involved in design for a wide variety of outcomes including a sensitivity to environmental, cultural and ethical issues;
  • be able to apply technical, creative and theoretical skills to take an idea from concept to production ready artwork; and
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of a broad range of design options and associated skills and their application in design.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Designer as researcher
  • Designer as global citizen
  • Designer as activist
  • Environmental and cultural sustainability: designing for whole of life-cycle systems and cultural impact
  • Tools, technology, materials and processes in contemporary design: embracing experimentation
  • Fundamentals of data and information graphics
  • Cultural awareness in design for education and health: stakeholder engagement
