HIP203 Health and Development through the Lifespan (8)

This subject develops knowledge of human development and health through a lifespan perspective. Students will explore the characteristics and developmental milestones at different stages of life, gain knowledge of a range of associated health conditions, and examine the link between human development and health. This subject will enable students to extend their holistic view of health, wellbeing and development by considering their psychological, cultural, physical, physiological and environmental determinants.

Available only to students enrolled in Bachelor of Health and Rehabilitation Science, and Bachelor of Health and Medical Science courses. Other courses with approval from the Course Director.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to explain the typical features and developmental milestones of different life stages;
  • be able to analyse health and ill-health relevant to different life stages;
  • be able to appraise the interdependence of human development and health;
  • be able to analyse the relevance of psychosocial, cultural, physical, physiological and environmental factors on health, wellbeing and human development; and
  • be able to use, create, communicate and share multimodal information in digital environments to compare and contrast health and development at different life stages.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Determinants of health, wellbeing and development across the lifespan;
  • Childhood: developmental through play, language and socialisation; health events in childhood; children living with a disability;
  • Adolescence: establishing identity and sense of belonging; risk taking behaviour; peer pressure; developing independence; health events in adolescence;
  • Adulthood: establishing occupational identity; leisure, hobbies, and social interests; sexual identity and behaviours; childbirth; parenting; health events in adulthood; and
  • Older adulthood: healthy ageing; physiological changes of ageing; occupation and retirement; changing health needs; death, dying and bereavement; loss of independence and institutional care.
