HML501 Managing People Productively in Health Services (8)

This subject prepares students for managing people productively in high-pressure work environments. Students learn to develop and justify a workforce plan, develop recruitment and retention strategy and to apply learning theory in the creation of staff education plans. There is also a focus on interpersonal approaches to managing people including conflict resolution, mentoring, and techniques for empowering, inspiring and enabling others.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to evaluate their own practices for empowering, inspiring and enabling others;
  • be able to identify and evaluate techniques for improving staff performance in high-pressure work environments;
  • be able to mentor staff and colleagues;
  • be able to reflect on personal experiences with workplace conflict and develop a conflict resolution plan;
  • be able to create a plan for educating staff by drawing on an understanding of learning theory;
  • be able to develop and justify a workforce plan that aligns with key organisational planning documents and addresses skill mix, budget, staff retention, succession planning and risk assessment; and
  • be able to create a flowchart that represents staff recruitment.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Tools for empowerment, inspiration and enablement;
  • Learning theory;
  • Mentorship;
  • Causes of unhealthy workplaces;
  • Conflict resolution;
  • Workforce planning processes;
  • Recruitment requirements - position descriptions, interviewing, working with Human Resource departments and systems; and
  • Staff retention.
